Accessibility and Usability Statement for yorkemc.co.uk

On this page:

This page summarises the accessibility and usability features implemented throughout the York EMC Services Ltd web site. Considerable effort has been spent in ensuring no-one is denied access to the content of this site regardless of software choice or personal disability. Even so, if you have any suggestions for improvement, please contact the webmaster. Comments are appreciated.

Several site-wide navigational tools have been implemented:

A set of access keys has been implemented across the site. Modern mainstream browsers (IE 4+, Netscape 6+ and Mozilla) support this in platform-dependent ways - Windows users should try pressing Alt and the access key (in some browsers this only focusses on the link - press [Enter] to follow the link); Mac users should try pressing Ctrl and the access key.

Page loading times

The mean XHTML page size is under 9 kB; a "first-time" page load, including the linked CSS files and images, will usually be less than 20 kB more. A 28.8 kb/s modem should download this in under 10 seconds. Several representative pages have been tested at different times of day over a 28.8 kb/s modem to ensure the pages don't load too slowly. We strive to keep the sizes of downloadable items as small as possible; if you're having trouble with a particular page or item, please let us know.

We have used XHTML 1.0 and CSS 2 to bring you an accessible and usable site which is quick to load and easy to navigate. Images are presented in either JPEG format (for photographs) or PNG format. A smattering of Javascript has been used to enhance our pages; if your browser does not support Javascript or has it switched off you will suffer no loss of functionality. All pages are automagically “printer-friendly”, because the media attribute allows a separate style sheet to be applied to pages being printed. See our privacy statement for information on the site's use of cookies.

This site is written in Strict XHTML 1.0. Since XHTML 1.0 is merely a recasting of HTML 4.01 into XML, even older browsers can understand it. Because we have also strived to use tags correctly, the page content is available to the widest possible range of web browsers. Where we have used tags non-semantically, it is for pragmatic reasons, not mere whim:

Style Sheets

Cascading style sheets written and validated in CSS 2 are used for the selection of fonts and for layout.

Sans-serif fonts are used throughout for on-screen body text. Font-sizes are suggested, but are not fixed, even for browsers with limited capabilities. When printing a page, the navigation bars are removed and a serif font used for body text.

All pages carry the uniform identifier "#yorkemc-co-uk" on the body tag, allowing you to apply styles in user style sheets to just this site (see your browser's help files for details on how to do this).
